Steamboat Springs has something of a cult following amongst its fans, and that following is well earned.  This mountain has some of the best tree skiing in the US, a family friendly environment, and an authentic ski town feel.  However, Steamboat's biggest strength lies in its fantastic, fluffy snow, and Steamboat usually gets 343 inches of that snow each year.  If you're looking for a quality snow destination with your friends and family, Steamboat deserves your attention!

The Mountain

Steamboat is a massive mountain, including almost 3000 acres of skiable terrain, and a vertical drop of over 3,500 feet. There is quality terrain for beginners and experts alike, and the mountain's size ensures you won't get bored any time soon!

Getting There:

Located just under 3 hours from Denver, Steamboat Springs is more off the beaten path than resorts like Vail or Breckinridge.  While this can be a bit of a hassle if you live in Denver, it's good news for out-of-state visitors because it leads to less crowding!  Another bit of good news is that Steamboat is expanding their air accessibility, and it is only getting easier to get to this wonderful mountain!

You'll Need:

To safely have a good time on the mountain, you'll want to arrive at Steamboat with all of your ski clothes in toe.  It's a pricy affair buying all of your gear in the Springs, and it will also take away from your precious skiing time.

Below is a sample list of clothes for  you'll need for Steamboat's variable and often cold conditions: 1) Goggles, 2) Waterproof, insulated Gloves, 3) Waterproof Snow Jacket, 4) Upper Body Midlayer ( (i.e. Fleece, Merino Wool, Puffy Jacket, etc...), 5) Upper and Lower Body Long Underwear, 6) Lower Body Midlayer (i.e. fleece pants, or another type of non-cotton warm layer), 7) Waterproof Snow Pants, and 8) 2+ Pairs of Warm, Non-Cotton Socks (Smart-wool is a great comfortable and warm sock to use)
Depending on the warmth of your jacket and the weather during your visit, you may even want to get one extra top layer, as Steamboat can get very cold at the top of the mountain.

In terms of equipment, Steamboat has more demo and rental services than you can count!  It's not necessary to buy equipment if you're new to snow sports, but if you do have your own gear it will definitely enhance your experience.

Turns out, Colorado's a pretty scenic place. Who knew?

Pro-Tips!

Personal Skiing/Riding: For the pro's looking to have a less crowded experience, the upper left side of the mountain's extreme terrain is a natural deterrent to Steamboat's crowds.  For the advanced skiers, similar benefits can be found by the Pony Express Lift Line, as most people tend to stay towards the middle-right side of the mountain.
For quality tree skiing, close your eyes, pick a spot on the map with trees, and go there.

Lessons: Unless you're shredding chutes, a lesson will almost always improve your trip.  The better you are on the snow, the more fun you'll be able to have!

And if you decide to take lessons, don't forget to tip your instructor!  Most instructors live on wages that just barely pay the bills, and frequently work 10+ days in a row.  They're doing what they love, but your appreciation makes all the difference in the world!
Lastly, if you have the meansPrivate Lessons are the way to make your trip truly spectacular!  Having a professional to
take you to the best spots on the mountain, show you fun tricks on the snow, and keep you entertained is guaranteed to make your trip better!
